Breed loyalty was on full display as the first-round voting in our Top Dog bracket came down to the wire Thursday.

As you narrowed our field of 32 to 16, some of the match-ups were blowouts, while a few came down to just a few votes one way or the other.

The clear winners? German shepherds took about 80 percent of the vote in their battle with the mixed breed schnoodle, which was left behind at the food dish. Likewise, the Yorkshire terrier ate the Chihuahua’s crumpets, garnering about 77 percent of the vote.

The Labrador retriever — the American Kennel Club’s top dog for 27 years running — had no trouble fetching a win over the Yorkipoo, winning 86 percent of the vote. The French bulldog, judged the most popular dog among San Franciscans and No. 4 on the AKC top 100, had a little more trouble dispatching its competition, the Maltipoo, but it still walked away with 66 percent of the vote.

Other perennial breed favorites stumbled. The Boston terrier, pug, dachshund, bulldog and rottweiler all went down to inglorious defeat.

The closest contests, which came down to the wire as voting closed, were between the German short-haired pointer (58 percent) and the pug (42 percent); Labradoodle (52 percent) and the beagle (48 percent); and the Doberman pinscher (53 percent) and the Shih Tzu (47 percent).

At one point, just two hours before the polls closed, the Dobie’s lead over the Shih Tzu was just three votes.

We now move onto the Sweet 16 round. Voting starts now and will end at noon Monday. If your favorite breed still is in the running, don’t let it down. Vote now. And here’s a little inside tip: you can vote more than once.
