It’s 1975 and the Observer Magazine is dedicated to life with our four-legged friends
The Observer Magazine of 9 March 1975 featured PG Wodehouse writing about his dogs (‘Pekes, hounds and mutts I have known’). The article formed the introduction to Son of Bitch, a book of photographs (with a very un-Wodehousian title) by Elliott Erwitt. Perhaps press times precluded it but no mention is made that Wodehouse had died just a few weeks earlier.
Wodehouse is pictured with his one-year-old stray, Boy, at his home on Long Island. ‘There is not a sitter in his gallery who does not melt the heart,’ he writes about Erwitt’s pictures. ‘And no beastly class distinctions, either. Thoroughbred or mutts, they are all here.’
